Федерация была основана в феврале 1928 г., во время Олимпийских зимних игр в Санкт-Морице (Швейцария) под первоначальным названием Международная ассоциация спортивной медицины.

FIMS aims primarily to promote the study and development of sports medicine throughout the world, and to assist athletes in achieving optimal performance by maximizing their genetic potential, health, nutrition, and high-quality medical care. It was founded at the Winter Olympics held in St Moritz, Switzerland in February 1928 under the name of the Association International Medico-Sportive.
